First-Timer in Kyoto: A 7-Day Itinerary

MEby Marthe Efftink·7 days·10 stops·

— Overview

I first fell in love with Kyoto on a rainy October trip in 2018. This is the slow, sensory route I now send every friend who asks — paced for jet lag, plotted around the best light, and full of the small rituals that make the city sing.

Day 1

Arrival in Kyoto

3 stops
  1. 1

    Fushimi Inari Shrine

    Sight

Beat the crowds at sunrise — the vermillion torii tunnel feels otherworldly when it's just you and the foxes.

    34.9670° N · 135.7727° EOpen in Maps
  2. 2

    Nishiki Market

    Food

Lunch crawl through 'Kyoto's kitchen' — try yuba, tako tamago and a soft serve from one of the matcha stalls.

    35.0049° N · 135.7644° E
  3. 3

    Pontochō Alley

    Evening

Lantern-lit alley along the Kamo River. Pick any place with a hand-written menu — you can't really lose here.

    35.0080° N · 135.7707° E

Day 2

Out of the city

2 stops
  1. 1

    Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

    Nature

Get there before 8am. The light through the stalks is the whole reason you came.

    35.0094° N · 135.6717° E
  2. 2

    Tenryū-ji Temple

    Sight

Skip the main hall, pay for the garden — one of the oldest in Japan and easily worth an hour of doing nothing.

    35.0157° N · 135.6739° E

Day 3

Temples & gardens

2 stops
  1. 1

    Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)

    Sight

Yes it's busy. Yes it's still spectacular. Loop the pond clockwise and exit fast.

    35.0394° N · 135.7292° E
  2. 2

    Ryōan-ji Rock Garden

    Sight

Sit on the wooden veranda and try to see all 15 stones at once. You can't. That's the point.

    35.0344° N · 135.7183° E

Day 4

A walking day

2 stops
  1. 1

    Philosopher's Path

    Walk

Two-kilometer canal walk lined with cherry trees. Stop for warabi mochi at Saryo Hosen.

    35.0264° N · 135.7944° E
  2. 2

    Nanzen-ji Aqueduct

    Sight

Brick aqueduct in the middle of a Zen temple — strangely cinematic.

    35.0114° N · 135.7937° E

Day 5

Slow morning, late dinner

1 stops
  1. 1

    Gion at Dusk

    Evening

Walk Hanamikōji street around 6pm. If you're lucky you'll see a geiko hurrying to her appointment.

    35.0036° N · 135.7755° E
